2007 ASC Junior Championship
****
With heavy fog and low clouds, the big day for the juniors didn’t look
good at all. I really thought the regatta was in serious jeopardy. With
all the boats rigged and carefully inspected, we waited almost two hours
for the weather to cooperate. It finally paid off. We had a very steady 8
to 10 for the next three hours. Five races were sailed in near perfect
conditions using Sunfish, with the five skippers changing boats after each
race. The 2007 ASC Junior Champion is Nate Damen. It was a close
regatta almost the whole way between Ted Smyth and Nate, each taking a
first and a second in the first two races. Ted looked good in the third
race with another first but Nate was right there with another second and
only one point behind with two races to go. At this point the regatta had
turned into a match race. Then with sudden enthusiasm, Jack Magruder
decided to join the fun, taking a second in the fourth race. Nate took
another first, and with Ted’s disaster, a foul, at the weather mark, Nate
now had a two point lead with only one race to go. Jack wasn’t through
getting into the mix though, taking a first, but Nate secured victory with
a second, Ted was third. As it all shook out, Nate 8 points, Ted 11 and
Jack 12. Danielle Reheme and Coe Magruder were competitive and showed
promise, but were not consistent enough, so it will be back to the
practice drills and waiting for another shot at the big trophy next year.
Marcus Moehlman, and parents Jeff Magruder, Bob Damen, Ted Smyth, and
juniors, Wyatt Holder and Elizabeth Hundt were all a big help to me. It is
very satisfying to have parents and other juniors step up and help with
the program. My deepest gratitude goes to all those that have been there
when needed during the year. Jim Holder
